I’d love to say that my two miniature examples of Old Parr would score as highly as a modern bottling, but blends and malts change over the years so the quality remains a mystery until the tasting.
The Grand Old Parr blend, like the Dimple I mentioned yesterday, is another ‘must have’ for a whisky collection. First introduced in 1909, Old Parr is named after the Englishman, Thomas Parr (1483 – 1635) who reputedly died aged 152. Since whisky is ‘the water of life’ it makes sense to choose a whisky brand name from someone who lasted a long time.
At the heart of the Old Parr blend is Cragganmore, with Glendullan being a major part after World War II. Since the 1980s Old Parr hasn’t been sold in the UK or Europe, which explains the foreign writing on both my miniature bottles. Japan and South America are the big markets for Old Parr these days with this 12-year-old holding 52% of the Colombian Scotch market in 2009-10. My blog has had hits from readers in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador but not Columbia, so it will be interesting to see if this post about Old Parr brings in some visits from there. If so – hello Colombia!
